Wollongong Local Court is the primary judicial complex for the Illawarra region. It processes all summary criminal offences, serious indictable matters heading to higher courts, complex traffic matters, and AVOs. It shares the heritage courthouse building with Wollongong District Court, which hears more serious matters and appeals.
Located at the corner of Market and Church Streets in the city centre, the court is approximately a 10 to 14-minute walk from Wollongong Train Station on the South Coast Line. The free Gong Shuttle bus runs through the CBD nearby. For drivers, the Market Street Car Park directly opposite the court offers all-day parking at reasonable rates, with other public car parks within walking distance. Street parking is limited and fills quickly, so arrive early.
The courthouse opens at 9:00am and courtrooms generally begin hearing matters at 9:30am, but you should aim to arrive early to clear security screening and locate your courtroom. When you arrive, check the daily court list - displayed on screens in the foyer and available online through the NSW Online Registry - to find your courtroom number. Your first appearance is usually a mention, a short procedural hearing where the charge is confirmed and the court notes your plea. Matters are not always heard in list order, so be prepared to wait. Dress neatly, turn your phone off before entering the courtroom, and wait for your name to be called. If you have a lawyer, they can announce your appearance, speak to the police prosecutor on your behalf and, where appropriate, ask the court to adjourn your matter to allow time to prepare.
