Top Criminal Lawyers in Sydney: How to Evaluate a Shortlist
We won't publish a ranked list of other firms - we can't verify their claims, and we don't think you should trust ours either. Here's what to actually check when you're shortlisting a criminal lawyer.
Why We Don't Publish a "Top 10" Ranking
Plenty of pages online claim to list the "top 10 criminal lawyers in Sydney." We're not going to add another one, for a simple reason: we have no way to independently verify another firm's experience, results or client satisfaction, and we're not going to publish unverified claims or comparisons about competitors.
What we can do is set out, clearly and honestly, what's worth checking when you're comparing lawyers yourself - and how to spot the difference between a genuinely useful list and a directory page dressed up as one.
How to Evaluate a "Top 10 Lawyers" List
If you come across a ranked list elsewhere, these are worth checking before you trust it.
No named individual lawyer
A genuine recommendation is about the specific person who'll handle your matter, not just a firm name. If a list only names firms with no lawyer named or no way to check their admission, treat it as a directory listing, not a vetted ranking.
Paid or sponsored placement
Many "top 10" pages are directory or lead-generation sites where firms pay for inclusion or higher placement. That's not necessarily dishonest, but it's a different thing to an independent ranking, and it's often not disclosed clearly.
No verifiable detail
Look for specifics that can actually be checked - court admissions, how long the firm has practised criminal law specifically, and genuine review platforms rather than testimonials curated on the firm's own site alone.
What Actually Matters
Relevant criminal defence experience and court admissions, clear and responsive communication, transparent fees, and familiarity with the specific court your matter is listed in. For the full breakdown, see our guide on what to look for in a criminal defence lawyer.
